THE SEVEN CHAKRAS

Learning Our Inner Power

Chakras

The chakra system originated in India between 1500 and 500 BC in the oldest text called the Vedas. The principles of Chakras are found in Hinduism, Buddhism, Qigong, and Silat. One belief system that covered most of South East Asia still holds value today and supports elements of the esoteric found across the whole world.

The system is very diverse but for us, we will stick to the main principle of seven Chakras, there is ample reading available if you want to learn more. The Chakras are seven inter-related energy points aligned vertically down the body. Each controls aspect of ourself, and effects that aspect when the Chakra is not functioning properly, what we call 'blocked'. We all know the misery of blocked sinuses, headaches, fatigue, and irritableness are just a few of the unpleasant symptoms, and the relief when the discomfort is lifted. The same is true with blocked Chakras.

The prime elements have a place in Chakra understanding as they do in all mystic lore. They are linked here by a divine feminine energy called the kundalini, Chakra meditation, simply put, is focused on the flow of this energy through the Chakras and on the Chakras themselves.

ROOT CHAKRA

Muladhara Chakra

Muladhara Depicting the Earth element and the color red, the Root Chakra controls the foundations of our body, the coccyx, anus, lower bowel, adrenal glands, back, legs, feet, and bones.

In our connection to the Earth we can feel our history, heritage, and our roots, a balanced chakra supports confidence and inner security but if blocked gives unease and a sensation of being lost. Feeling disconnected, loneliness, and nightmares can trouble us even when all seems fine.

To connect to this Chakra, find your 'place', where you feel a real connection to the ground beneath your feet. We can only build on a strong foundation and this is where it lies. We can only go somewhere if we know where we have been.

SACRAL CHAKRA

Swadishthan Chakra

Swadishthan Representing the element of Water and the color orange, the Sacral Chakra rules our hips, kidneys, pelvis, sexual organs, and lower back.

Guiding us in our feelings and emotions, it can give us great joy and happiness and yet we know that how we feel can easily turn to sadness and discontent. Directing our choices of the heart and the beginnings of insight and intuition. It can hold serene calm or great passion equally and requires good judgment and a firm foundation to weather.

“You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop.” ~ Rumi. Perhaps the poet was thinking of the expanse of our emotions in this thought.

SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA

Manipura Chakra

Manipura Associated with Fire, the Solar Plexus Chakra is yellow. Controlling the stomach, gall bladder, spleen, liver, skin, and muscles.

The energy of this Chakra compels us to action or inertia. This inner flame gives us the ability to take on the impossible and win or collapse in lethargy and despair. Whether we allow this energy to guide our judgment, passion, and ideas is ours to choose, often it is human nature to let the fire rule us rather than control it ourselves so beware.

The allure and power of flame can enthrall us to our own destruction if we do not feed it with facts and purpose it will consume ideals and dreams.

While the Sacral Chakra may rule passion, the Heart rules love and compassion. The power of knowledge, ideas, and understanding leads to a deeper spiritual connection that allows the true sensation of love to come into being.

Loving without the concept of personal need, opinion, and bias is a high ideal that we rarely strive to achieve or maintain.

The power of the word comes from this Chakra and should be used wisely or not at all.

THIRD EYE CHAKRA

Ajna Chakra

Ajna With the element of Light and the color indigo, the Third Eye Chakra governs the pineal gland, eyes, sinuses, nose, brain, and face

Traditionally the Third Eye allows us to see into the spirit realm, here it gives foresight, intuition, and concentration with the obvious counters when blocked. As indigo is only visible in the rainbow to some people, so the Third Eyes is only open to some naturally but can be opened with practice and meditation. Auras and Chakras are visible to those with this vision, it is a noble gift when used wisely.

That thing we call intuition? It’s your soul. You can trust it. ~Unknown
