Unity

As the numbers on this page grew to reach five hundred likes I took to consider the importance we hold to being part of something and what was to be gained on an individual level and also a group level.

There is a unique energy to be found when humans gather, whether at a sports game or in a church. When we all feel connected with a common cause or goal there is a definite energy that courses through us and charges the atmosphere. In this modern world that energy can be felt across miles even continents, language, faith, country can all be that connection or none and the source, the focal point is something completely different.

I have seen here a common cause in the power of faith and divine energy, regardless of religion we understand that we are part of a greater thing and we are blind to its complete existence.

Yet on these pages we do seek proof of a kind, not the proof of scales and rules, micrometers and hertz but rather the proof that is felt in our hearts to strengthen our faith. To apply our connection that we are able to find fulfillment in ourselves and also to spread joy and comfort to our fellow-man.

The Weight of a Shared Room

There is a difference between being present and being counted. A crowd is a headcount; a unity is something else — the moment a room of separate histories briefly forgets its separateness. It does not require agreement. Two people can hold opposing views on almost everything and still feel, for the length of a shared silence, that they are oriented toward the same thing. That orientation is the thing itself. Not the belief, not the cause, but the direction everyone happens to be facing at once.

Why It Is Rarer Than It Looks

Most gatherings fail to produce it. A meeting is not a unity. A queue is not a unity. What separates the moments that hold real charge from the ones that are merely adjacent bodies is usually the presence of stakes — something genuinely at risk, or genuinely hoped for, that no one person can secure alone. This is why grief unites faster than celebration, and why celebration, when it does unite, tends to be the kind that was earned rather than given. Ease rarely produces it. Difficulty, shared and acknowledged, produces it reliably.

The Individual Inside the Collective

The suspicion many carry toward unity is not unreasonable — the word has been used to erase people as often as it has been used to hold them. A unity that requires the individual to disappear is not unity, it is absorption, and the two are frequently mistaken for one another. The distinction is whether a person's particularity survives contact with the group or is asked to dissolve for the sake of harmony. Real unity does not ask you to stop being singular. It asks whether your singularity can stand next to someone else's without either one needing to win.

What Modern Distance Has Not Broken

It would be easy to assume that the modern arrangement — screens instead of rooms, timelines instead of gatherings — has thinned this out to nothing. It hasn't, quite. The charge still crosses distance, still crosses language, arrives compressed and delayed but intact enough to be recognisable. What has changed is the source. It used to be geography and blood that decided who your unity was with. Now it is closer to resonance — a stranger three thousand miles away, aligned by nothing but a shared read on the same problem, can produce more of that charge than a neighbour who has nothing in common with you but proximity.

The room empties eventually. What stays is not the number, but the brief evidence that separateness was never as solid as it looked.
