Cancer

Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac, symbolised by the Crab.

People born from June 21 to July 22 are Cancerians.

Cancer is a Water sign, which in astrology describes a more emotionally intuitive, empathetic temperament, and Cardinal, meaning it initiates rather than sustains or adapts. It's ruled by the Moon — the only sign ruled by something other than a planet.

Where the Symbol Comes From

Cancer constellation crab symbolThe crab traces back to a Greek myth in which the goddess Hera sent a giant crab to distract Heracles while he battled the multi-headed Hydra. Heracles crushed it easily, but Hera, moved by its loyalty, placed the crab among the stars anyway — a small, ultimately unsuccessful defender rewarded for trying.

What Cancer Is Like

In astrology, Cancer is associated with nurturing and emotional depth — someone who feels protective of the people close to them and puts real effort into making a place feel like home. That same protectiveness has a less comfortable side. Cancer can retreat behind a hard shell when hurt, and its moods can shift as noticeably as the tides its ruling Moon is associated with.

Strengths: nurturing, loyal, intuitive, protective, deeply committed to the people it loves.
Challenges: can be moody, overly sensitive, or prone to withdrawing rather than addressing a hurt directly.

Cancer in Love

In relationships, Cancer tends to want emotional safety above almost everything else — a partner who can be trusted with vulnerability and who won't take that trust lightly. That depth of care can make Cancer an intensely devoted, nurturing partner. It can also make Cancer prone to reading too much into small slights, or retreating into silence rather than saying directly what's actually wrong.

Cancer in Friendship

Among friends, Cancer is often the one who remembers the hard week you had and checks in without being asked. Cancer friendships tend to be close and long-lasting rather than wide, built on genuine emotional investment. The trade-off is a tendency to take a friend's distance personally, even when it has nothing to do with them, and to withdraw rather than ask what's really going on.

Compatibility

Cancer is often considered compatible with Scorpio and Pisces, which share its Water element and its emotional depth. Taurus and Virgo are also traditionally associated with Cancer, bringing a grounded practicality that can complement its intuition. Compatibility in astrology, however, depends on much more than Sun signs alone.

What Makes Cancer Different

Cancer's opposite sign is Capricorn — the two sit directly across the zodiac wheel from each other, and are traditionally read as a study in contrast: Cancer's focus on emotional security and home against Capricorn's focus on structure and public achievement. Cancer is also the only Cardinal Water sign. Scorpio, as Fixed Water, holds its emotional intensity steady, and Pisces, as Mutable Water, dissolves and adapts, while Cancer, as Cardinal Water, initiates emotional connection and is often the one who opens a bond first.
