Aquarius

Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the zodiac, symbolised by the Water-Bearer.

People born from January 20 to February 18 are Aquarians.

Aquarius is an Air sign, which in astrology describes a more social, idea-driven temperament, and Fixed, meaning steady and resistant to change once a position is settled. Modern astrology names Uranus as its ruler; traditional astrology assigns Saturn.

Where the Symbol Comes From

Aquarius constellation water-bearer symbolThe water-bearer traces back to Ganymede in Greek mythology, a young man taken up to Olympus to serve as cupbearer to the gods. The water he pours is usually read as a symbol of knowledge and ideas being shared freely, poured out for anyone willing to receive it, which is where the sign's association with humanitarian ideals largely comes from.

What Aquarius Is Like

In astrology, Aquarius is associated with independent thinking — someone drawn to ideas ahead of their time, uncomfortable simply following a rule because it's always been the rule. That same independence has a less comfortable side. Aquarius can come across as detached, more interested in the idea of people collectively than in any one person individually, and its stubbornness can be as fixed as its element suggests.

Strengths: original, independent, intellectual, humanitarian, loyal to causes and people alike.
Challenges: can be aloof, unpredictable, or resistant to being told what to do.

Aquarius in Love

In relationships, Aquarius tends to want a partner who is also a genuine friend — someone to talk ideas through with, who respects independence rather than needing constant closeness. That can make Aquarius a loyal, low-drama partner who avoids possessiveness. It can also make Aquarius seem emotionally distant to someone who wants more overt affection, since Aquarius tends to express care through loyalty and engagement rather than sentiment.

Aquarius in Friendship

Among friends, Aquarius is often the one with the unconventional idea or the cause everyone else hadn't thought to care about yet. Aquarius tends to build wide, varied friend groups rather than one tight circle, valuing what each person brings intellectually. The trade-off is that Aquarius can be harder to get emotionally close to than its friendliness suggests, keeping a certain independence even within its closest bonds.

Compatibility

Aquarius is often considered compatible with Gemini and Libra, which share its Air element and its love of ideas and conversation. Aries and Sagittarius are also traditionally associated with Aquarius, bringing an energy and spontaneity that can complement its originality. Compatibility in astrology, however, depends on much more than Sun signs alone.

What Makes Aquarius Different

Aquarius's opposite sign is Leo — the two sit directly across the zodiac wheel from each other, and are traditionally read as a study in contrast: Aquarius's focus on the collective against Leo's focus on the individual. Aquarius is also the only Fixed Air sign. Gemini, as Mutable Air, moves between ideas quickly, and Libra, as Cardinal Air, initiates connection between people, while Aquarius, as Fixed Air, holds firmly to its own ideas and principles once they're formed.
