When Your Light Feels Dim
Sometimes life's harder seasons can temporarily cloud our inner sun, leaving us feeling heavy, disconnected from joy, or like we are moving through thick fog. This is not
a permanent state. It is simply your system asking for some gentle tending — like a garden that needs water and light before it can bloom again. The practices on this page
are not about forcing positivity. They are about creating the conditions in which your own energy can begin to move again.
The Gratitude Spiral Technique
This practice works by gently shifting attention from what is heavy to what is present and bearable, then upward from there. The key is to start genuinely small — not with
aspirational gratitude but with things that are simply, undeniably true right now.
- Start tiny: "I am grateful my heart is beating" or "I am grateful for this breath."
- Notice comfort: "I am grateful for this warm cup" or "I am grateful for soft socks."
- Appreciate nature: "I am grateful for sunlight" or "I am grateful trees exist."
- Acknowledge support: "I am grateful someone cares about me" or "I am grateful for kind words."
- Celebrate small wins: "I am grateful I got up today" or "I am grateful I am trying."
Move through each level only when the previous one feels genuinely true. There is no rush. The spiral works by accumulation, not speed.
Sunshine Crystals for Energy
These four stones are among the most consistently worked with for low mood, depletion, and the kind of flatness that follows prolonged stress. Each carries a warm, activating
quality that suits the solar plexus and sacral centres.
- Citrine: Associated with personal power and joy. Hold in your right hand or place on the solar plexus to work with its activating quality.
- Carnelian: Traditionally linked to motivation and courage. Wear as jewellery or carry to help reignite a sense of engagement with life.
- Sunstone: Brings optimism and vitality. Place in a sunny window to warm, then hold while setting a clear intention for the day.
- Orange Calcite: A gentle energetic cleanser. Works well when the flatness feels more like stagnation than acute sadness.
Solar Plexus Activation Practice
The solar plexus — the area above the navel — is associated in many traditions with personal energy, will, and the capacity to act from a grounded sense of self. This
practice works gently with that centre.
- Sit comfortably with Citrine or Sunstone resting on your upper abdomen.
- Place both hands over the crystal.
- Breathe into this area, imagining golden warmth filling your belly with each inhale.
- With each exhale, let that warmth expand outward through your chest and limbs.
- Say silently: "I am my own source of light and energy."
- Continue for 5 to 10 minutes, or until you feel a slight shift in quality.
Joy Scavenger Hunt
When energy is low, the mind tends to narrow its focus onto what is wrong or missing. This practice works against that narrowing by actively directing attention toward small,
genuine sources of pleasure — not manufactured happiness, but real moments that carry even a slight warmth.
Find something that makes you smile, however slightly — a favourite piece of music, something in nature, a funny or beautiful image. Notice how your body responds even to
a small moment of delight. Keep a running list on your phone of things that reliably work for you, so that on the harder days you do not have to search from scratch.
Joy is always available in small doses, even during genuinely difficult times.
Movement for Mood
Energy generates energy. Even gentle movement can begin to shift a flat or heavy mood by changing the physical state the emotion is resting in. These require no equipment
and very little time.
- Simplified sun salutation: Reach arms overhead, fold forward, step back, step forward, reach up again. Repeat slowly three to five times.
- Dance to one song: Let your body move however it wants. No form, no rules, no performance.
- Shoulder rolls: Simple tension release, especially effective when carrying an uplifting crystal in one hand.
- Gentle stretching: Cat-cow, neck rolls, ankle circles — anything that brings attention back into the body.
- Walking meditation: Five minutes outdoors, paying attention to the sensation of feet on ground.
Colour Therapy for Mood
Colour has long been used in therapeutic and esoteric traditions as a way of influencing emotional state. The mechanism is partly psychological — we associate certain colours
with particular qualities — and partly about deliberately shaping our immediate environment in ways that support how we want to feel.
- Orange: Stimulates creativity and enthusiasm. Candles, flowers, clothing — any intentional orange in your environment carries this quality.
- Yellow: Associated with optimism and mental clarity. Sunlight, lemons, golden objects — even a yellow mug can carry the intention.
- Warm pink: Brings a quality of gentleness and self-care. Rose quartz, soft fabrics, flowers.
- Bright green: Connected to growth and renewal. Plants, time outdoors, green aventurine.
Creating Energy Anchors
An anchor is a deliberate association between a sensory experience and a desired state. Built during good moments, it becomes available to you in the harder ones. These
are worth establishing before you need them.
- Scent anchor: Use an uplifting essential oil — orange, peppermint, lemon — consistently during moments of genuine wellbeing, so the scent begins to carry that quality.
- Music anchor: Build a playlist of songs that reliably lift your spirits, kept ready for when you need it.
- Crystal anchor: Carry the same stone daily so it accumulates association with your positive moments and intentions.
- Photo anchor: Keep images that consistently bring warmth or joy easily accessible — not buried in a folder, but somewhere you will actually see them.
A Five-Minute Energy Reset
- Hold Citrine or Carnelian in both hands.
- Stand facing a window or step outside.
- Take five slow deep breaths, imagining warmth and light entering with each inhale.
- Name three things you can see, and say "thank you" for each one.
- Shake your body gently from head to toe — shoulders, arms, hips, legs.
- Smile deliberately, even if it feels forced at first. The physical act of smiling feeds back into the emotional state.
A Weekly Structure
Mood and energy are easier to sustain when they are tended consistently rather than reached for only in crisis. A loose weekly rhythm removes the decision-making burden
from the harder days.
- Monday: New week intention with Sunstone — what quality do you want to carry into this week?
- Wednesday: Mid-week gratitude practice with Orange Calcite — what has held so far?
- Friday: A small celebration of the week's wins, however modest — what did you do that was hard or good?
- Sunday: Rest and restoration with Citrine — what does your energy need before the next week begins?
